A community theater group, the Off-Broadway Players. is rehearsing for its latest production, the romantic comedy play “Sandy Toes and Salty Kisses.”
The seven-member cast has been rehearsing for six weeks for the play, which centers around what director Terri Hoover calls “a case of mistaken identity.”
The play was written by Susan and Michael Parker in 2019 and features a destination wedding at a beach hotel gone wrong, after a hotel maintenance man called “Uncle Bubba” — played in this show by Ron Smith— disguises himself as a wedding planner named “Madame Coco”.
“He’s changing costumes constantly throughout the show, and then the fiancé gets mistaken for another gentleman, so the wedding is on again, off again, on again, off again,” Hoover said.
Broadway High School student Zachary Trost plays Peter, a young groom whose wedding is affected by the main characters’ antics. Though Trost performed in “To Kill a Mockingbird” with the Players in the spring, this role allows him to have more speaking lines.
“He’s pretty excited to be marrying, but he’s a little scared of the mother-in-law — terrified, actually,” Trost said of his character.
Trost said that people who come to the show can expect “lots of laughs.”
“It’s a really goofy show,” Trost said.
In addition to the seven cast members, there will be a stage manager, one stage crew member and two volunteers running lights and sound.
The Players will perform their summer show across two weekends, July 26 through 28 and Aug. 2 through 4, at J. Frank Hillyard Middle School. The two Sunday shows will begin at 3 p.m., and the Friday and Saturday shows will be at 7 p.m. Tickets are $17 for adults and $15 for students and seniors.
The Off-Broadway Players will next host auditions for its winter play, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” on Aug. 10 and 11 at 2 p.m.
