The Community Foundation of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County announced recipients for more than $200,000 in a Wednesday press release.
The nonprofit awarded $113,000 in new scholarships for new college freshmen, with an additional $151,900 going to continue ongoing scholarships. Scholarships were sent to 35 colleges, universities, and vocational schools, including three community colleges and one vocational school, according to the release. Students who recceived the scholarships will be attending 19 Virginia schools and 16 schools out of state.
Ann Siciliano, director of program services with TCFHR, said the scholarships were made possible by donors who partnered with the foundation.
“We are so grateful for our donors, who provide life-changing scholarships for area students,” Siciliano said in the release. “So often these scholarships are the difference between a student being able to pursue education beyond high school and not having that opportunity, due to financial need.
“We were so impressed with the candidates who submitted applications this year. Their stories moved our review committees, and we are confident these students will thrive in the coming years. Our sincere congratulations to all 2024 recipients.”
The scholarship annually rewards over $200,000 to high school, community college, and university students based on merit and need, according to the release. The scholarships are one of TCFHR’s several initiatives to facilitate giving and philanthropy in the local community. Other programs include annual grant cycles for nonprofits, charitable gift planning, professional advising, and its hallmark annual Great Community Give.
In April, during 2024’s Great Community Give, the foundation raised more than $2.1 million for Harrisonburg-Rockingham area nonprofits. The event allows community members to donate to participating organizations, with awards being granted throughout the event hourly or as specific milestones are met.
